The historical city of Arnhem knows a rich history. In the 13th century it was designated as a city by right and in 1817 it became the capital of the province of Gelderland. The city was hit hard during the 2nd World War and primarily because of the world famous Rhine bridge. The long history ensures that Arnhem has a lot to offer to its visitors. Ranging from museums to a sprawling city centre with lots of interesting stores.
Hotel Gieling offers a special Gelredome package for visitors of the Gelredome including 1 night stay, diner, breakfast buffet and a shuttleservice to and from the Gelredome. Click here for more information.
With over 1.5 milion visitors each year, Burgers' Zoo is the most visited tourist attraction of Gelderland. The park is over 11 acres and is home of at least 400 different species. Burgers' Zoo is best known for its impressive "eco-displays", or faithfully recreated habitats. Visitors to Burgers' Zoo can walk effortlessly from the African savannah through the tropical rainforest and a Mojave desert all the way to a scenery that looks like the South-East ocean. A unique experience for young and old!
The past comes to life in the Dutch Open Air Museum. This museum offers an intimate glimpse in the daily life of Dutch people through the ages. Based on historically accurate buildings decorated in the way the Netherlands lived and worked like in the past.
A number of these buildings are 'inhabited' by employees of the museum dressed as the original inhabitants. They explain what they do and tell about the way the building was used. Many of the buildings are torn down brick by brick and put back again on their final location in the museum. This explains the high degree of historical accuracy.
The town of Duiven is a relatively new addition to the Netherlands. Only until 1816 the town was taken over from Prussia, the predecessor of present day Germany. From the mid 1980's Duiven started to grow and now has over 26.000 inhabitants.
Duiven is best known for the large regional business parks where multinational companies such as Makro, MediaMarkt, IKEA and the Intratuin have settled.
The Horsterpark lies between Westervoort and Duiven. The name of the park refers to a nearby area called the Horst. In the Horsterpark a number of sport venues are built surrounded by a forest where you can go for a lovely walk. An eye-catching part of the park is the big pond with the event site. For children there is a play forest and a petting zoo.
Next to recreation the park also offers a number of meaningful activities for people with a mental disablity or people with addiction problems. More information about the park can be found on the website.
Centerpoort - Nieuwgraaf
